James Watkins Smith, Sr.

James W. Smith, Sr., 59, of 118 East 10th Avenue, Johnson City died Monday, December 3, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Smith was a native of Nashville, TN and had lived in Johnson City for most of his life. He was a son of the late Jackson Wesley Smith, Sr. and Odie Iola Hand Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ. He is preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Aaron McKinney. Survivors include: his wife, Carol Joy Berry Smith, of the home; two daughters, Julie Ott of Johnson City and son-in-law, Kevin Ott of Elizabethton, and June W. Smith of Johnson City; one son, James W. Smith, Jr. of Johnson City; two son-grandsons, Austin Logan Smith and Noah Smith; grandsons, Matthew McKinney, Elijah McKinney, Jonathan Ott, and Daniel Ott; four brothers, Jack Smith, Jr. of Alabama, Joe Smith of Florida, Jeff Smith of Gray, and Jessie Smith of Jonesborough; one sister Janice Sloan of Alabama; several nieces,nephews and great nieces and nephews. The funeral service for James W. Smith, Sr. will be conducted at 8 PM Thursday, December 6, 2007 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Donny Reagan and Chaplain Edward T. Jefferies will officiate. Active pallbearers will be members of the Johnson City Police Department. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 2 PM Friday in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. The family and friends will meet at Morris-Baker at 1:30 PM Friday to go in procession. Police honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Johnson City Police Department. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 5 to 8 PM Thursday prior to the service.
