Jean Culp Dr. Flanigan

Dr. Jean Culp Flanigan, 73, of Johnson City, died Wednesday December 6, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center. Jean had lived in Johnson City since 1973. She was the daughter of the late D.P. Culp and Martha Street Culp. Jean received her B.S and M.S. Degrees, both in English, from Auburn University, and her Ed.D. from East Tennessee State University. After teaching several years of High School English in Alabama, Connecticut, and Washington County Tennessee she served in several different Faculty positions at ETSU where she rose to the rank of full Professor. After serving as Interim Dean of the Sherrod Library, she retired from ETSU as Professor Emerita in 2012. Jean was a professionally trained operatic mezzo soprano and was an enthusiastic singer throughout most of her adult life. She sang in the Johnson City Civic Chorale and in the adult Chancel Choir at Munsey United Methodist Church for many years. An active member of Munsey, she served on the staff-parish relations committee as well as being a Sunday School Teacher. She led the Sherrod Library Book Club for over 10 years and enjoyed weekly dinners with friends. In addition, she was a rabid Auburn Football fan and kept up with collegiate and professional sports of all types. Having been preceded in death by her parents, Jean is survived by her son, Stephen McIver Flanigan of Taiwan, as well as her brothers Jim Culp and wife Gretchen, John Culp and wife Jane, her nieces and nephews James Culp and wife Kellie, Sarah Culp Searles and husband Andy, Rebecca Culp Napreyeva and husband Maxim, Jennifer Culp and husband Justin, Joseph Culp and wife Hannah, and several Aunts and Uncles. The family will receive friends at Munsey United Methodist Church Sunday December 17 from 4:00-5:00pm followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 5:30pm.
