Joan B. Fisher, 85, of Johnson City, passed away Friday, May 27, 2016, at home. Joan was born in Detroit, Michigan, resided in Boulder, Colorado, and had been a Johnson City resident since 1966. Joan and her loving husband William ?Bill' J. Fisher met in Colorado on a Sunday at a Walgreen?s lunch counter when she asked him to pass an item. Joan was naturally gifted at talking with people and drawing them out. Joan and Bill married at Central Woodward Christian Church in Detroit, MI, on August 30, 1957. Joan graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit. She completed classes at the University of Detroit and Wayne University of Detroit to graduate with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Commerce and Finance in 1952. She was a member of Phi Gamma Nu. She taught in the Detroit public schools for several years. She attended University of Colorado-Boulder from Fall 1957 to Summer 1959 graduating with a Master?s Degree of Business Education. In her youth, Joan played both piano and violin. She was a Detroit Parks and Recreation arts & crafts leader. She sang baritone with Sweet Adelines in Colorado and Tennessee, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and University School Parent Teacher Association leader, hosting the book fair for several years. Joan was a long-time member of East Tennessee State University?s University Women?s Club (UWC), and UWC Book Review Club, holding leadership and treasurer roles. She was a member and host of the University Square Dance & Dinner Club, member of the Historical Society of Washington County, Unicoi County Historical Society, and Friends of the Johnson City Public Library. Joan was a federal and state tax practitioner for over 40 years. Her hobbies included reading, especially current events and history, and attending book signings to engage authors and obtain an autographed edition. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, William Francis and Daisy Arbelle Mitchell, her sister Virginia M. Fehn and husband Alfred ?Al' Fehn. Joan was followed in death by William ?Bill' J. Fisher, her loving husband of 58 years, who died a week after her. Joan is survived by her two children Thomas (Herlynda) Fisher of Mukilteo, WA, and Eric (Faith) Fisher of Manassas, VA; one granddaughter Mia Fisher of Manassas, VA; two siblings William Francis (Helen) Mitchell and Geraldine ?Geri' Ruth (Robert) Isgan; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 8, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Morris-Baker Funeral Home with services to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joan?s name to a historical society, the Johnson City Public Library, 100 W. Millard St., Johnson City, TN 37604, or to your favorite charity.
