John E. Scalf, Jr., 68, PO Box 910 Juniper Cottage, Greeneville, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007 in the Greene Valley Developmental Center. Mr. Scalf was a native of Washington County who had lived most of his life in Greeneville. He was the son of the late Rev. John E. Scalf, Sr. and Ruby Bowers Scalf. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Dulaney and her husband Fred; one nephew, Wayne Dulaney; several half brothers and sisters. He had been a resident of Green Valley Developmental Center for the past forty years. John loved attending church at New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church. He also attended Bible study at Greene Valley. He loved listening to gospel music and playing the guitar. John also enjoyed coming to Johnson City with Vickie Stublefield and Wayne Hyatt to eat with his sister and brother-in-law. Survivors include: one sister, Barbara Hammer and her husband Earl, of Johnson City; two brothers, Harold Scalf and his wife Shelia, of Watauga and Charles Scalf and his wife Tresia, of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews also survive; John is also survived by his family at Greene Valley Developmental Center whom he loved very much. Many thanks go out to them for the wonderful care they gave to John. The funeral service for John E. Scalf, Jr. will be conducted at 2 PM Sunday, March 11, 2007 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev.Mike Young will officiate. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Josh Ledford, Wayne Hyatt, Mark Barner, Neal Holt, Steve Inscore, Danny Copas and Justin Elby. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Munir Ahmed, Dr. Devi Deeann, Dr. Marlen Mathiesen, Joyce Daniels, Debbie Bryant, Kay Payne and Dr. Bud Meece. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel on Saturday from 6 to 8 PM and also on Sunday from 1 to 2 PM prior to the service.
