John Glenford Boyd

John Glenford Boyd, 79, of Kingsport passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Holston Manor in Kingsport, TN. He was a native of Saltville, VA and the son of the late William 'Bill'? and Mary Helen Moore Boyd. John was a great athlete and loved all sports (especially baseball). He played college football and baseball. While serving in the US Army during the 1950s, he was selected to play baseball on the militarys All-Star team. He liked the New York Yankees and attended many games at Yankee Stadium while stationed in New York. After his military service, he attended Major League Baseball umpire school. His favorite team was the Cincinnati Reds and he attended many games during the glory days of the Big Red Machine. After moving to Johnson City, he worked as an agent for National Life Insurance Company. He is preceded in death by siblings, William L. Boyd and Doris Boyd Keebler. Survivors include: son, John David Boyd; daughters, Susan Boyd Bolton and Amy Boyd Mann; grandsons, Nicholas Mann and Brandon Mann; former spouse, Pat Boyd; siblings, Wilda Boyd DeBusk, Thomas Milton Boyd and Janice Boyd Boydston. The family would like to thank the staff of Briarcliff Health Care in Oak Ridge, TN., especially his friend Kamika Mize. They would also like to thank the staff of Holston Manor in Kingsport, TN. especially Mona, Felicia, Jeri and the rest of the caretakers on 100 Hall.
