John Roger Deal

John Roger Deal, 80, of Johnson City, TN, died Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Life Care Center of Gray from Alzheimer’s.

John was born in Auburn, NY and had resided in Johnson City for the past 26 years. He was the son of the late Dorothy Vannais McLean of Auburn, NY, and the late John H. Deal.

He attended high school in Skaneateles, NY, attended the University of Rochester, and was a graduate of the Willard NY School of Nursing. He worked for many years as an RN for the NYS Dept. of Mental Hygiene. He later worked as a letter carrier and clerk at the Auburn Post Office. He retired while working at the Alemite Corp. in Johnson City in 2005.

John was a member of TOPS TN0321, Johnson City. Besides his family and friends, his greatest joys were reading his Bible, writing, morning walks, and visiting and writing friends in Great Britain.

John was a Baptist and former member of Sempronius Baptist Church in Sempronius, NY, and attended Harrison Christian Church in Johnson City.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his step-father, John McLean and brother, Randy Deal.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia Searls Deal; two daughters, Stephanie Deal (husband Drew Scharoun) of Auburn, NY, and Amy Auchtung of Johnson City; his granddaughter, Peyton Auchtung; great grandson, Greyson Wilcox; three brothers, Peter (Dawn) McLean of Ruskin, FL, Tim McLean of Skaneateles, NY, and Rory (Lynne) McLean of Ellicott City, MD; several nieces, a nephew, and great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to send a special thanks to the staff on Unit 4, the Mind Care Unit, at the Life Care Center of Gray for their kindness and loving care during John’s time there.

John’s family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 7:00 pm, under the direction of Pastor Karl Gasser. A Celebration of Life service will be held 5:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Izzo's White Barn Winery (6634 Cayuga Road, Cayuga, NY 13034).
