John W. Freeman, Sr., 79, of 926 E. Mountainview Road, Johnson City, died Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the Johnson City Medical Center following an illness. He was a native of Roan Mountain, son of the late Henry C. and Dollie Arnett Freeman. Mr. Freeman was a retired Chief Petty officer and veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam having served in the U. S. Navy. He was awarded the: Good Conduct medal (4 times), Asiatic Pacific, Navy Occupation , National Defense, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Campaign Medal, and Bronze Star for Good Conduct Awards two and three periods ending April 4, 1959. John also retired from I.T.T. Electrical Company and had lived in Johnson City since 1965. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by six brothers, Matthew, David, James, Marion, Frank and John Freeman; and five sisters, Frances, Essie, Blanche, Pauline and Maude as well as a grandchild, Austin Chance Freeman. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren and will be missed forever. Survivors include: his wife, Dephia L. Freeman of the home; two sons, John W. Freeman, Jr. of Johnson City and Bobby H. Freeman and his wife, Louise; a daughter, Marsha Dale Shelton and her husband, Dennis of Gray; a brother, George V. Freeman of Gray; a sister, Nina Belle Pickering of Gray; four grandchildren, Ashley Moore, Bobby Wesley, Amber Brooke, and Summer Hope Freeman; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, 2006 in the South Chapel of the Morris - Baker Funeral Home at 8:00 p.m. under the direction of Evangelist, Stan Gross. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until time of service at eight. A committal service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at the Washington County Memory Gardens at 2:00 p.m. the Kingsport VFW #3382 will provide military honors. The family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home to leave in procession at 1:30 p.m. Active pallbearers will be: Butch Freeman, Joe Freeman, Clint Moore, L. D. Bennett. Joe Jones and Jeremy Workman.
