Joseph D. 'J.D.' Whitehead, 83, of 710 Lincoln Avenue, Johnson City died Monday, March 19, 2007 in the Lakebridge Health Care Center. Mr. Whitehead was a native of Old Butler, TN and had lived in Johnson City for most of his life. He was a son of the late Carson J. and Abigail Campbell Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead was a retired operator with the Continental Trailways Bus Company with forty-two years of service and awarded the Two Million Mile Safety Award . He was a Charter Member of the Clark Street Baptist Church where he served in numerous positions in the church. He served and took great pride in his work with the House and Grounds Committee. He was also a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of WW II. Mr. Whitehead is preceded in death by: one son, Jeffrey ; his step-mother, Eliza Whitehead; four brothers, Herbert Whitehead, Frank Whitehead, Clyde Whitehead, and Robert Whitehead; three sisters, Frances Hafner, Mae Reed, and Dorothy Campbell. Survivors include: his wife of fifty-eight years, Dorothy Jackson Whitehead of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph 'Joe' and Mary 'Sassy' Whitehead of Clewiston, Florida; one grandson, Joshua Whitehead of Orlando, FL; one granddaughter, Melissa Whitehead of Clewiston, FL; four brothers, Bill and special sister-in-law Mary Alice Whitehead of Greeneville, TN, Edward and wife Ruby Whitehead, Bud and wife Betty Whitehead, all of Johnson City and Paul and wife Jean Whitehead of Jacksonville, FL; three sisters, Christine Dye, of Cynthiana, KY, Sarah and husband Mike Sellers of Johnson City, and Jean Stewart of Springfield, TN; special friends, Billy Ferrell and Ed Ferrell, both of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews ; many special friends in Clewiston, Florida where he and his wife spent the winter, and the members of First Baptist Church in Clewiston, FL.; his extended family of Staff and Residents at Lakebridge Health Care Center. The funeral service for Joseph D. Whitehead will be conducted on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at 8 PM in The Morris-Baker South Chapel. Pastor Mike Anglin will officiate. The eulogy will be given by Jeff Blackburn and Mike Hyder. Music will be by Mr. Tony Bowman,soloist. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday, March 22, 2007 at the Roselawn Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by the VFW Post # 3382 and the Tennessee National Guard of Kingsport. The procession will form at Morris-Baker at 10:30 AM Thursday. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Blackburn, Mike Hyder, Randy Ferrell, David Sims, Dan Hughes, Eddie McCall, Ted Lane Bryant, and Bob McInturff. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of the Clark Street Baptist Church, Sam Grogg?s Open Men?s Bible Class, Glenn Slemp and Bill Donaldson.
