Joseph Patrick Hammitt, 51, 709 E. Locust Street, died Monday, August 31, 2009 in Pineville, LA. Mr. Hammitt was a native of Johnson City and had lived in Louisiana for the past few years. He was a son of the late John D. Hammitt, Sr. and was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Ellena Polinka. Mr. Hammitt was a Merchant Marine. Survivors include his mother, Mary A. Hammitt, Johnson City; two daughters, Heather Jones and her husband, Charles, Chucky, Bobbie Jo Brown, Sevierville; one son, Matthew Hammitt, Jonesborough; two brothers, John D. Hammitt, Jr., Johnson City and James Maher, LA; one sister, Rose Stratton, Johnson City; one half brother, Carmon Mills, LA; one niece, Alice Fuller, Jonesborough; five grandchildren, Tyler Brown, Evan Brown, Aaron Jones, Nicholas Jones and Shadia Hammitt and his special friends, Barbara and Wayne Zitto, LA. A funeral service for Mr. Hammitt will be conducted at 8 PM Friday, September 4, 2009 from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 3 PM Saturday at Washington County Memory Gardens. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 2:30 PM and travel in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Milhorn, Jerry Milhorn, Charles Jones, John Berry, Dwight Fair and Larry Honeycutt. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of his niece Alice Fuller, 115 Goodin Drive, Jonesborough, TN.
