Joyce Byrd Holbrook

Joyce Spain Byrd Holbrook, 89, Johnson City, died Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at Cornerstone Village. She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late James Herbert Spain and Lottie Mae Holder Spain. Joyce was a retired sales person and regional manager for Sarah Coventry Jewelry from 1960 until the company closed in 1985. She also owned J. B. Wholesale for many years. She was a 1946 graduate of Science Hill High School. Joyce attended Harvest Time Baptist Church where she sang in all the choirs. She was a former member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church and Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was choir director at Roan Hill Baptist Church in 1950?s. Joyce was a member of Johnson City Senior Citizens, ABWA of Johnson City at Holiday Lanes; President of Women?s Bowling League also was top lady bowler in 1960 to 1970. She had a ?contagious smile' and that touched everyone she encountered. Joyce was a true ?Jesus Girl'! In addition to her parents her husband Robert ?Bob' Holbrook preceded her in death in 2005; brothers and sisters, Ralph J. Spain, Lloyd G. Spain, William ?Bill' Spain, Mabel Peterson Sheffield, Ruby Spain Sey and Barbara J. Spain Estep all preceded her in death. Survivors include: her sister, Brenda Rigsby Hubbard and her husband Ron Hubbard; lots of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She also loved her caregivers Debbie Pealer and many others. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 4:30 pm until 5:30 pm. A graveside service will be conducted in the Mausoleum Chapel at Washington County Memory Gardens on Friday, December 22, 2017 at 10:00 am under the direction of Pastor Bill Pealer. Burial is to follow. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
