Judith Woodford Judy Surface

Judith 'Judy'? Woodford Surface, 72, of Gray, TN, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at home following a short illness. She was a native of Roanoke, VA, daughter of the late Cedric Woodford and Mamie Martin Woodford. Judy had a Bachelor of Arts degree from Roanoke College where she was valedictorian of her class. She had a Master of Education degree from the University of Louisville and attended the Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville. She retired as assistant professor of computer information systems at Tusculum College. Judy was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, where she was a member of the choir. She loved to cook and served for a number of years as a leader of 'dinners for eight' at her church. She took great pleasure in helping the church acquire its new Berghaus pipe organ. Her other hobbies included tennis, bridge, reading, and traveling. She was a member of the Monday Club. Survivors include: her husband of 51 years, James 'Jim' L. Surface, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, James L. Surface, Jr. and Jennifer of Signal Mountain, TN; a daughter and son-in-law, Susanna S. Piller and Jack of Keene, NY; two grandchildren, James Elliott Surface and Julia Bandy Surface of Signal Mountain; and one brother and sister-in-law, Brent Woodford and Edith of Salem, VA. The funeral service for Judith 'Judy'? Woodford Surface will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday, November 23, 2013 in the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Louis Imsande and Rev. Patricia Willard will officiate. There will be a reception following the funeral service in the First Presbyterian Church. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 2:30 PM Saturday, in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 2:20 PM Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the organ fund for organ maintenance at First Presbyterian Church, 105 S. Boone Street, Johnson City, TN 37604.
