Julia Alice Thompson Winters, age 70, of Johnson City passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at her residence. She was born November 23, 1942 to J. Harold and Wilda Trotter Thompson of Johnson City. She was preceded by her parents; three brothers, William Harold Thompson, Joseph Lewis Thompson, and Steven Charles Thompson; one sister-in-law, Ann Rice Thompson, and a dear cousin, Mark C. Hicks, Jr. She is survived by her sister Emily T. Gilreath and brother-in-law Charles Meride Gilreath, Sr.; sister-in-law, Nora Harris Thompson; and ten nieces and nephews. A very special friend, Gary Michael Elam and her beloved Maine Coon cat, Bigfoot, also survives her. Julia graduated from ETSU Training School. She was a member of the Chesterfield, Virginia Jaycettes and the Soroptimist Club of Richmond, Virginia and Charlotte, North Carolina. She had several careers: real estate paralegal; jewelry store manager; greeting card marketer; and finally a Master gardener and landscape planner with her friend and co-worker, Gary Michael Elam. She lived in Richmond, VA, Charlotte NC, and East Tennessee. Julias friends were dear to her as she was to them. She reached out to those who needed her. She shared her garden and kitchen with them. She will be missed by them but fondly remembered. A memorial service for Julia Alice Thompson Winters will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, February 16, 2013, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Pastor Frank Trexler will officiate. The inurnment service will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 PM prior to the service. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, caregivers and three very special friends, Patsy Black, Margaret Tucker, Paula Lovill and sister-in-law Nora Thompson who gave Julia such excellent care during her illness.
