Kenneth Garland King

Kenneth Garland King, age 87, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord and those who left before him, on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at American House Kingsport.

Kenneth was born August 6, 1936, to the late Raymond and Viola Hughes King, in Unicoi County. He graduated from Unicoi County High School. It was here that he met his first sweetheart, Bertie Lee Brummett. They were married for 50 years until her passing in 2004.

Kenneth served in the Army Reserves for eight years until his honorable discharge. Kenneth retired from Eastman after 25 years of service where he supervised several departments. After retirement, he stayed busy flipping houses, enjoying music (especially the guitar), and woodworking. He was also very active in his church, Milligan Free Will Baptist Church. Kenneith was an ordained deacon in the Free Will Baptist Church for over 50 years.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, Kenneth was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Byers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his second wife, Mary King; daughters, Judy McLaughlin and Janey (Johnny) Tolliver; grandchildren, Lindsay (Kevin) Lester, Travis (Whitney) McLaughlin, Kevin (Elizabeth) Tolliver, and Chelsea Tolliver; great-grandchildren, Kannon, Karson, and Kade Lester; brothers, James King and Ernest (Elaine) King; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Kenneth’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to American House Kingsport and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care of Mr. King.

Kenneth’s family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm, under the direction of Pastor Mark Street. The committal service will commence the following day, at 12:00 pm on Friday, October 13, at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Those attending are asked to please meet at the cemetery by 11:50 am.
