Kermit E. 'Champ' Young, Jr., aged 66, passed away at home unexpectedly on November 2, 2014. Music was at the center of Champs life. He was a widely respected keyboard player, composer, and lyricist. Champ was born in and grew up in Kingsport, where he attended Dobyns-Bennett High School. He and his family then moved to Johnson City, where he lived at the Rosepoint Apartments for most of his life thereafter. Champ was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit E. Young, Sr. and Dionne Byrd Young, as well as his beloved maternal grandmother, Mary Ellen Grinstead Byrd, and cousin Jane Ellen. He is survived by his older sister, Rosemary Young Brener and brother-in-law, Jasper Brener, of New York; niece, Jan Brener, great nephew, Max Coakley, and great niece, Jessie Brener, of London, England; cousins, Carl and Kathy Young, Jr., of Gray, TN, and their children, Carl III, Ann Katherine, and Mary Ellen; Mary Dionne Young Hawkins and husband, William M. Hawkins, and their children, Linda and Bill; and Ralph and Amy, the children of Champs late cousin Jane. The family will receive visitors from 11 am until 1 pm Friday, November 14, 2014 in the Morris-Baker North Chapel. The memorial service will follow in the North Chapel at 1 pm.
