Kingsley Laile 'Pappy'? Hampton, Johnson City, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Hampton was a Greene County native and had lived most of his life in Johnson City. He was a son of the late Dosser and Savina Shelton Hampton and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Hampton, two sisters, Jewel Jones and Marie Rhett and one brother, Kendrick Hampton. Mr. Hampton was the owner/operator of Tri-cities Communications. He was a charter member and deacon of Clark Street Baptist Church and later a member and deacon of Central Baptist Church. Mr. Hampton graduated from the Asheville Boys Farm School that later became Warren Wilson College. He was a Distinguished Alumni and served on many of that schools boards. He was a board member of the Johnson City Parks and Recreation and had coached many womens church league softball teams. He was a WWII US Army veteran serving in the 10th Armored Division in the European Theater and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. Survivors include his wife, Helen Hampton; his children, Charles Hampton and his wife, Pat, Johnson City, Susan Kubenka and her husband, John, Johnson City, Janet Celko and her husband, Bob, Durham, NC, Dianne Greene, Johnson City, Cynthia Greene, Marietta, GA, Jim Greene and his wife, Elizabeth, Marietta, GA and Joni Russell and her husband, Bill, Marietta, GA; seven grandchildren, Matthew Celko, Chase Hampton, Jarek Kubenka, Andy Russell, Will Kubenka, Katie Greene and James Greene. A funeral service for Mr. Hampton will be conducted at 2 pm Friday, January 16, 2009 from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Reverend R. Willard Warfield will officiate. Music will be provided by Mr. Tracy Pigford. Military graveside services will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Thursday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Hampton-Newcombe Scholarship Fund, C/O Warren Wilson College, PO Box 9000, Asheville, NC 28815.
