Leon Capps

Leon Capps, 83, of Johnson City died Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home. Mr. Capps was a native of Erwin and lived in Johnson City most of his life. He was a son of the late William Hobert and Ruby Sullins Capps Teele. Mr. Capps was retired from law enforcement having served with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Washington County Sheriffs Department. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of WW II serving in the South Pacific Theater and after returned to Johnson City to graduate from Science Hill High School in 1947. Mr. Capps played professional baseball with the Johnson City Smokies. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a Mason, a Shriner and the Professional Golf Association. Mr. Capps served as the first Golf Pro at the Pine Oaks Golf Course. He retired from the Johnson City Parks and Recreation in 1989 to fish, hunt, travel and play golf. Mr. Capps is preceded in death by: his parents; his loving wife, June Swartz Capps (a cadet nurse at the VA Hospital at Mountain Home for 33 years) in 2006, one sister, Katherine Barnett Smith; and one brother, Donald Teele. Survivors include: one daughter, Carolyn and her husband David Whedbee of Johnson City; two brothers, Dana Teele of Dandridge, TN and Ellis Teele of Johnson City; four grandchildren, William 'Allen'? Capps, Cheryl L. Martin and husband Stacy, Jeanie Daily, and Adrianne Whedbee; great grandsons, Cody 'Alex'? Capps, Jordan Chase Clendenon, and Joshua Chance Clendenon; one niece, Teresa Sammons; three nephews, Tony Barnett, Seon Teele and Vincent Teele; several great nieces and great nephews also survive. The funeral service for Leon Capps will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, December 18, 2009 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected . The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 12 Noon to 2 PM Friday prior to the service.
