Leonard Franklin Long, 83 of Johnson City, died Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at the James H. Quillen Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was a native of Des Moines, Iowa, son of the late Leslie Earl and Vera Irene Ferguson Long.
Leonard was a proud veteran of the Vietnam war, having served his country in the U. S. Navy for twenty years. Leonard survived the war having been a foot soldier on the ground in Vietnam. He finished his career as a Chief and a recruiter.
Leonard was a Protestant.
He loved the mountains.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Iva Lee Stevens Long in 2005; step son, Troy Dale Cox and several siblings.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirley Jenkins Long; two step daughters, Toni Wise and Mary Cox; two sisters and a brother, Betty, Marj and Larry; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
There will be a committal service conducted on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at 1:00 pm at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in the Historical section under the direction of Pastor Todd Hare. Military honors will be accorded by the U. S. Navy Reserves. Family and friends are asked to assemble by 12:50 pm.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes memorials be made to Wounded Warrior Project @ woundedwarriorproject.org.
