Margaret B. Collins

Margaret Collins of Unicoi, Tennessee, died October 19, 2014. She was born in Banner Elk, NC, on December 28, 1919. She resided in Unicoi, TN since 2001, and prior to that she was a Carter County resident for approximately 65 years. She was an alumnus of Milligan College in Milligan, TN where she graduated in 1942 with a BS degree in teaching. She taught at the old rock house school on Gap Creek Road for a couple of years and then taught at Happy Valley Elementary where she taught 4th grade. After teaching for approximately 38 years she retired from the Carter County School System in Jan 1982. Other than her parents Lunda and William Barlow, she was preceded in death by her husband Minton Collins; and three sisters, Jeanette Barlow, Edith Jones, and Ruth Raper. Survivors include: her daughter, Kay and son-in-law Rick Becka of Unicoi, TN; a Grandson, Jon Becka of Johnson City TN, Sisters, Esther Barlow and Mildred Prevett, Johnson City, TN; and Miriam Archer, Jonesboro, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive her. Some of her last words were, ' I hope Im meeting your expectations.'? Margaret was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Lees McRay College, Banner Elk, NC and for many years she attended the Powder Branch Baptist church, in Johnson City, TN. She retired from the Carter County School System Jan 1982. She loved her vegetable and flower gardens and loved when she could go on a hike in the mountains. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to either: Powder Branch Baptist Church, Rural Rt. 2, Johnson City, TN 37601 or Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32256. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm. A funeral service will be conducted at 6:00 pm in the North Chapel under the direction of Pastor Gene Cornett. A committal service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Patton Simmons Cemetery, Milligan, TN at 1:00 pm family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 12:45pm. Active pallbearers will be: her nephews and Mark Edens. A special thanks to her caregivers, Maggie, Emily and Betty Jo and the staff of Amedisys Home Healthcare.
