Marie Sims Miller, 86, passed away, Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at her apartment at Magnolia Crossing in Appalachian Christian Village. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry C. Miller; her parents Mac and Ethel Newton Sims of Hilton, Virginia; sister Francis Sims Kern of Kingsport; and brother Malcolm J. Sims of Hilton, Virginia. She is survived by her sister Alice Carrier and her husband Chuck of Bristol, TN; her sister-in-law Gloria Sims of Hiltons, Virginia; many beloved nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and many special friends. Born in Hilton, Virginia, Marie has lived in the Piney Flats or Johnson City area since 1947. She was proud of her service as a civilian worker in the military, serving as an administrative assistant to the commander of the ETSU ROTC program until her retirement. She loved the university, its faculty, and its students, and continued to stay involved with it as much as possible, volunteering in various ways until declining health prevented it. Marie was always a tireless worker in the church, serving in many different capacities at New Bethel Presbyterian Church in Piney Flats and then later at First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City where she was very active in years past with the womens group and the senior citizens. She also served on committees for the Holston Presbytery. Marie was proud of her significant contribution to her community during her many years of service with the Womens Auxiliary at the Johnson City Medical Center, where she served as President for several years. She was also involved with the conception, planning, and building of the Ronald McDonald House there. Her condo association at Xanadu Place elected her as president and to other offices as well several times in her years at that location, and Marie was also active with the ETSU Retirees group. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm, Friday, August 10, 2012, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 7pm, Friday, August 10, 2012, at Morris Baker Funeral Home with Dr. Angus Shaw officiating. A committal service will be held, 10:30pm, August 11, 2012, at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be nephews, great-nephews and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Ronald McDonald House, 418 North State of Franklin Road, Johnson City, TN 37604.
