Marie Wassum Mottern

September 3, 1936 — January 31, 2020

Surrounded by her family and close friends, Marie Mottern passed away peacefully at the JCMC following a brief illness on Friday, January 31, 2020.

Marie was born in Johnson City in 1936 to Pauline and Carl Wassum. She resided in Johnson City until the early 1990's then relocated to Nashville. Following moves to Chattanooga, New Tazewell, Knoxville and Maryville, Marie and Tom Mottern, her devoted husband of 26 years, moved back to Johnson City in 2018. Marie was a graduate of Science Hill High School and later ETSU, where in 1957 she graduated with a degree in Business, a pioneering degree for a female in those times. She was devoted to St. John's Episcopal Church where she created new children's programs and later worked to establish a robust written history of the Church. She was active as an officer for both the Girl Scout Council and the Junior League. She also served as the executive Director of the United Way. In her years away from Johnson City, Marie traveled the state as a Bank Examiner for the Tennessee Banking Commission.

Marie loved to travel, having visited much of Europe, Russia and many of the Islands. Her favorite though, was Alaska which she visited twice. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, spending time with her family brought the greatest joy, both to her and her loved ones.
