Marion Star Shew

Marion Star Taylor Shew, 92, Johnson City, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014 in Four Oaks Health Care Center in Jonesborough. Marion was born January 12, 1922 in Plum Tree, NC. She was a daughter of the late Lendsay and Mittie Taylor. Marion moved to Johnson City at three years of age and lived all her life in the Cherokee community. She attended 12 years of school without missing a day, and graduated from Lamar High School in 1939. She was a wartime bride and married a soldier, the love of her life, in 1943. Her husband of 53 years, Joseph W. Shew, passed away in 1997. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by: four brothers, Clarence Taylor, Story Taylor, Hale Taylor, and Roy Taylor; and three sisters, Ally Jackson, Edna Richardson, and Marie Harvey. Ms. Shew was a founding member of the Cherokee Church of Christ, where she served many years as an Elders wife and Bible teacher. She also served as a cook at High Rock Bible Camp for 15 years. During her life, she was active in the Cherokee Community Club, Cherokee Ruritan, and was past president of the Cherokee School PTA. She was the first woman bus driver in Washington County and drove the bus for Cherokee School for 15 years. She competed for many years in the Johnson City Senior Olympics, was a Red Cross volunteer, worked as a foster parent, and volunteered with the Adult Literacy program. Marion also walked to support the Alzheimers Association for as long as she was able. Her home was always open to friends and strangers. Ms. Shew was a patriot. She loved to sing and played multiple instruments. Her last performance was playing the harmonica in the Four Oaks talent show at age 89. She is survived by: four sons, J. W. Shew (Nyoka), of Johnson City, Dan Shew (Kelly), of Springville, CA, Tim Shew (Diane), of Springville, CA, and Mike Shew (Regina) of Murfreesboro; two daughters, Alice Ford (John), of Jonesborough, and Jenny Cox, of Johnson City; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. The Shew family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff of Four Oaks for their tender care of Marion. The family of Marion Shew will receive friends from 5 pm until 8 pm Tuesday, September 16, 2014 in Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service is scheduled for 11 am Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Cherokee Church of Christ. Mr. Dewey Wolbright and Tim Hall, Minister will officiate. The committal service will follow at 12:30 pm Wednesday in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
