Dr. Mark James Airhart, age 65, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died peacefully at his residence on July 6, 2010. Born in Courtland New York on September 3, 1944, he lived in Johnson City for the last 27 years and loved the natural beauty and character of the area. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Debbie Moyer; children Tim Airhart, Mary Polson, Ashleigh Moyer, Andy Moyer and grandchild, Griffin Airhart. He was preceded in death by Judith Ann Airhart, his wife of 26 years and mother of Tim and Mary. Earning his BS in Biology at SUNY at Courtland, MS in Physiology and the University of Courtland, and PhD in Anatomy at the University of Vermont, Dr. Airhart was a highly respected Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine. He was a well published medical researcher and distinguished professor beloved by faculty, staff, and students alike. A few of his achievements include: 2002 Professor of the Year, 1999 Lee Brashears Award, 1998 Students Teaching Recognition Award Lee Brashears Award, 1997 Students Teaching Recognition Award Lee Brashears Award, 1996 Professor of the Year Students Teaching Recognition Award. He will be remembered fondly by his family as scout master, soccer and basketball coach, and outstanding father and husband. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, joyful laugh, and love for family and friends. The funeral service for Dr. Mark James Airhart will be conducted at 4 PM Saturday July 10, 2010 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Bob Edmonds will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 PM prior to the service.
