Martha Washington Dr. Bradley

January 7, 1925 — September 10, 2013

Dr. Martha Washington Bradley, age 88, of Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013 in the NHC HealthCare Center. Dr. Bradley was a native of East St. Louis, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Cecil Nutter and Mable Hunt Nutter. In addition to her parents her husband, Dr. George Washington Bradley also preceded her in death. Dr. Bradley was a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she received her B.S. and M.S. degrees. She was in the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. She received her PhD after she married her husband. She was a Professor of Education at East Tennessee State University for about thirty years. A member of the First Christian Church in Johnson City, she was very active in church affairs. Dr. Bradley was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, and other lineage societies. She was a representative of Sister Cities for Johnson City, visiting many of the cities that Johnson City adopted. She was very active in the Barter Theater and its Porterfield Society. After her retirement she was very active in the Johnson City Senior Center, where she loved participating in the Senior Olympics. She also had a keen interest in politics and supported strongly The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. Survivors include nieces, Gail Nutter, Sarah Nutter and Judith McCalla; nephew, Terry Kershaw and Linda Leigh Kershaw; and special friend, Joy Tittle. A Celebration of Life service for Dr. Martha Washington Bradley will be conducted at 7 PM Monday, September 16, 2013 in the First Christian Church, Johnson City. Mr. Eugene Wigginton will officiate.
