Mary B. Brown, 95, Johnson City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.
Mary was born in the Linville area of North Carolina in 1924 and has been a resident of Johnson City since 1950. She worked for over 30 years in the dietician’s department at the Veterans Administration at Mountain Home. She was a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church since 1950, where she volunteered in various capacities.
She is preceded in death by: her husband of 44 years, John C. Brown, Jr.; and a son, John Michael.
She is survived by: her three children, Judy Oaks and Betty Grice, of Johnson City, and Kim A. Brown (Paula) of Nashville; her five grandchildren, Lori Hankes (Bill), Jenny Dugger (Keith), both of Johnson City, Tony Grice, of Johnson City, Abbey Brown Whitley (Will), of New York City, and Olivia Brown, of Washington, DC; and two great grandchildren, Justin Hankes and Emily Hankes, both of Johnson City.
Mary loved animals, working in her yard, meeting new people and sports (especially if her kids, grandkids or great grand kids were playing). She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and a true friend to all she met. She will be greatly missed. She was very active with the Senior Citizen’s Center, where she learned line dancing and enjoyed participating in the Friday night dances.
The family would like to thank the staff and many friends at Broadmore Assisted Living Facility, especially the memory care unit, and the nurses with Avalon Hospice for all their efforts in caring for our mother. Also, thank you to Dr. Rachel Monderer for caring for our mother for many years.
A visitation for friends and family will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at Morris Baker Funeral Home, with a service to follow at 11:00 a.m. A private graveside service for the family will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Washington County/Johnson City Animal Shelter, 3411 N Roan St., Johnson City, TN 37601; Avalon Hospice, 208 Sunset Dr. Ste 340, Johnson City, TN 37604; or Unaka Avenue Baptist Church, 1213 E Unaka Ave., Johnson City, TN 37601.
