Mary Emma Martin

March 2, 1918 — August 24, 2013

Mary Emma Martin, 95, of Piney Flats, most recently a resident of Governors Bend Assisted Living in Erwin, died Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Piney Flats, a daughter of the late Arthur C. and Vesta King Shell. Mary Emma was a homemaker, charter and 'oldest'? member of the Piney Flats Presbyterian Church, where she also sung in the choir. She was an avid gardener, loved the out-of-doors, sewing, crafting and Tennessee Womens basketball. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John A. Martin in 2004, an infant son; a sister, Ruth Trivett; a brother, Thurman Shell. Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Tommy Vanover of Unicoi; a niece and her husband, Joyce and Roy Brookshire of Chattanooga; two nephews and their wives, Carroll and Bobbie Shell of Piney Flats and Bill and Ann Trivett of Nashville. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, August 26, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the South Chapel of the Morris '? Baker Funeral Home under the direction of Dr. Robert Rainwater. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until time of service at 7:00 pm. Martha Pinner will provide music. A committal service will be conducted on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 12:00 pm in the Shell Cemetery in Piney Flats. Active pallbearers will be: David Frizzell, David 'Butch'? Milhorn, Paul Hart and Larry Torbett. Honorary pallbearers will be: Carroll Shell, Roy Brookshire, Bill Trivett, Kent Vanover, Mark Vanover and David Campbell. Friends and family are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 11:45 am. The family would like to offer special thanks to: all the staff at Governors Bend, for their tender loving care and to the residents for their love and friendships and the nurses at both, the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital and the 7400 wing of the Johnson City Medical Center and Dr. J. W. Colinger and his staff. Memorials may be made to the Piney Flats Presbyterian Church, 6337 Highway 11E, Piney Flats, TN 37686.
