Mary Jewel Dempsey

Mary 'Jewel'? Dempsey, 86, of Johnson City died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Northside Hospital. She was a native of Watauga, daughter of the late John C. and Julia Emmaline Lacey Dempsey. Jewel was member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Elizabethton. She was also very active in the community, a former member and past president of the Johnson City Business Club and past president of the Democratic Womens Club. After graduating from Jonesborough High School in 1942, she began working at the phone company and two different doctors offices, a dentist office, JC Penney, later returning to the phone company a second time. On April 23 1953, Jewel began working at the Johnson City Power Board as a clerk in the Bookkeeping Department. She became a cashier on October 15, 2009, where she served until her retirement on June 29, 1996. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a nephew, Jack Thompson, Jr. in 1990.Survivors include: a sister, Frances Thompson of the home; a nephew, Peter Thompson of the home; a great nephew, Peter Thompson, Jr. of Johnson City A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the North Chapel of the Morris '' Baker Funeral Home, under the direction of Pastor Erwin Lueker. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until time of service at 7:00 p.m. A committal service will be conducted on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to leave in procession to the cemetery.
