Mary Marhefka Day, 100, of Falls Church, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2021, in the Fairfax Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fairfax City, Virginia.
Mary was a long time resident of Falls Church. She was the daughter of the late Michael Marhefka and the late Marian “Mary” Duffala.
Mary graduated from Salineville-Southern Local High School in 1938 where she was an outstanding artist. She graduated from the Chicago Art Institute in the 1940’s where she met her future husband Monroe F. Day now deceased where after getting married moved to Northern Virginia in the late 1940’s. She had a career in art, first working for various organizations including the American Red Cross where she drew various illustrations and designed a pin for their use, then worked for the Northern Virginia Free Press and Globe newspaper, and finally as an illustrator for the United States Army, Arlington Hall, Virginia where she designed various important briefing materials and emblems before retiring in 1983. Between work she was a housewife and raised two boys, Douglas Alfred Day, now deceased, and Harvey Michael Day
Mary was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church of Falls Church, Virginia.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by; two sisters, Helen and Anna; and by three brothers, Joe, John and Michael.
In addition to her son, survivors include her younger sister, Pauline.
A committal service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Monte Vista Memorial Park, with Pastor Mike Richards officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 AM.
Harvey will be staying at the Johnson City Holiday Inn on West Springbrook Drive starting the evening of February 2, 2021 and plans to leave the morning of February 5, 2021. Harvey will receive there those interested in viewing documents and pictures of the life and times of Mary.
