Mary V. Chaplin

November 10, 1925 — March 15, 2016

Mary Chaplin, age 90, passed away March 15, 2016 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born in Lancaster County, S.C. on November 10, 1925 to the late Robert and Maggie Varnadore. She was one of God?s humble servants. She was described by a friend as a ?great lady'. She was a devoted and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a leader in her church and in her community. She and her husband lived in Florence, S.C. before moving to Oxford, N.C. where they lived for 30 years. She was president of the Monday Club there, Chairman of the Board of Deacons at Oxford Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher, and was constantly volunteering and serving in her community. After moving to Johnson City approximately 18 years ago, she became engaged in the activities at Central Baptist Church and with Limited Edition Home Owners Association. She was a wonderful cook, a great seamstress, an avid gardener, a lover of books, and a strong organizer. She was always doing loving things for her family, friends, and people in the community. She so very much enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed but leaves her family with many wonderful memories of a life well lived. She is now at peace with her Lord. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Chaplin; daughter, Margaret Troy of Asheville, N.C.; and two sisters, Amelia Helms and Donnie Varnadore of Fort Mill, S.C. Those left to celebrate her life include: her daughter, Jenny Fowler, and her husband Art, of Johnson City; granddaughter, Mary Litton Thornton, and her husband Dave, of Purcellville, VA; two grandsons, Max Rose, and his wife Rachel, of Asheville, N.C. and Art Fowler III, and his wife Jennie, of Johnson City; three great-granddaughters, Maisie Fowler of Johnson City, Elizabeth Thornton of Purcellville, VA, and Winter Rose of Asheville, N.C.; five great-grandsons, James and David Rose of Asheville, N.C., Jack Thornton of Purcellville, VA, and Max and Owen Fowler of Johnson City; three brothers, Mack Varnadore of Harvest, AL, Harry Varnadore of Oak City, N.C., and Tommy Varnadore of Columbia, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thanks to Mary?s loving caregivers, Peggy Garland, Wanda Carder, and Bridget Jones. The family of Mary Chaplin will receive friends from 10:30 am to 11:30 am Friday, March 18, 2016 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11:30 am with Dr. Ron Murray officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Following the funeral service, family and friends will proceed to Mountain Home National Cemetery for committal services.
