Melvin R. Hicks, 76, of 296 Austin Springs Road, Johnson City, died Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was a native of Washington County and son of the late Hubert and Bea Ledford Hicks. Melvin was in the U. S. Army during peacetime serving as a Staff Sergeant stationed in Germany. He was a retired supervisor for Tennessee Eastman Company and was a member and deacon of the former Boring Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Gray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Boyd Hicks, and a brother, Maynard Hicks. Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Jim Fulwiler of Gray, five sons and three daughters-in-law, Steven Hicks , Robert and Debbie Hicks, and Joseph and Bonnie Hicks all of Avery County, NC, Matthew and Laurel Hicks of Kingsport and Mark Hicks of Johnson City; two brothers, Richard Hicks of Gray and Raymond Hicks of Greeneville ; ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2007 in the North Chapel of the Morris '' Baker Funeral Home at 6:00 p.m. under the direction of Rev. Richard Hicks. The family will receive friends at 5:00 p.m. until time of service at six. A committal service will be conducted on Friday, October 12, 2007 at the Mt. Home National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home to leave in procession at 12:30 p.m. Military honors will be provided by the Kingsport VFW #3382 and the Tennessee National Guard. Pallbearers will be his sons Steven, Robert, Joseph, Matthew and Mark Hicks and son-in-law Jim Fulwiler.
