Merle D. Michael

Merle D. Michael, 92, of 4109 Navajo Drive, Johnson City, died Thursday, November 23, 2006 at his residence. He was a native of Ozawkie, Kansas, son of the late Sherman L and Bertha Anderson Michael. Merle lived in Washington D. C. from 1934 until relocating to Johnson City in 1979. He was a retired employee of the U. S. Treasury Department as a Questioned Document Examiner with 10 years as the Chief Examiner. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy as a Yeoman First Class in the Southwest Pacific. Merle was a member of the Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, and belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, John Sevier Post #2108 Johnson City, and the Washington County Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, John Sevier Chapter and the Masonic Lodge #15, Casper, Wyoming. Merle was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Leah Grace Bailey Michael in 2002, a son, James D. Michael in 1970 and a brother, Melvin L. Michael in 2004. Survivors include: three sons William L. Michael of Arnold, Maryland, Robert M. Michael of Odessa, Florida and Gerald L. Michael of Cedaredge, Colorado; a brother, Elmer Michael of Greenville, South Carolina; two sisters: Freda Nordstrom of Chicago, Illinois, and, Leila Parker, of Treasure Island, Florida; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and his good friend Frances Whitaker of Johnson City. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 from the North Chapel of the Morris - Baker Funeral Home at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Mt. Home National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, 208 Sunset Drive, Johnson City, TN 37604 or your preferred charity in memory of Merle. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2006 at the funeral home.
