Mina Marie Poteet

Mina Milks Poteet, of Johnson City, Tennessee and Peachtree City, Georgia, died a week short of her 96th birthday on Wednesday, December 5th at North Side Hospital in Johnson City. Mrs. Poteet was the daughter of the late Carolina Mina Stuart Milks and the late Floyd Edwin Milks. She was born in Lennox, South Dakota but spent her childhood, adolescence and young adulthood in Jamestown, North Dakota. Prior to living in Johnson City, Tennessee and Peachtree City, Georgia, she had lived in Pueblo, Colorado; Laredo, Texas and Blountville, Tennessee as well as spending much time and enjoyment traveling to the lower 48 states, Canada, Mexico, England and Scotland. An avid gardener and flower lover, Mrs. Poteet had been a member of the Ivy Society, a life master judge emeritus with the Georgia Council of Garden Clubs, a master judge of landscape design, an active member of the Interior Design Club of Atlanta, a member of the Imaginatiff Study Club as well as the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Always an adventuresome and enthusiastic spirit, she is remembered as always being an encourager of education and personal growth. She enjoyed nature and the outdoors. She is preceded in death by her husband, Franklin R. Poteet, sister, Inez M. Olstad and brother, Robert C. Milks. Mrs. Poteet is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Reece, Phyllis Minnick of Abingdon and Ginger Oaks of Johnson City; five grandchildren, Caroline Wolfe, Jennifer Barber, both of Georgia, Ericka Christian of Rogersville, Justin Minnick and Devin Minnick and three great grandchildren, Trevor Christian, Benjamin Barber and Emily Barber. A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Poteet at Morris-Baker Funeral Home on Saturday, December 8th at 8:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, prior to the service. Rev. John A. Shuck will officiate. Interment will be private at a later date at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, Virginia. For those who wish, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to either the Atlanta Botanical Society, 1345 Piedmont, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30309 or to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102, Johnson City, TN 37601.
