Nancy Fewell Herrin died peacefully on March 11, 2006 at her home on Edisto Island, South Carolina. She was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on December 14, 1919. She lived most of her life in Johnson City, Tennessee following her marriage to Kent Herrin in 1947. Nancy Herrin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethton. She was a graduate of Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC and pursued graduate studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She worked at the American Red Cross during World War II. Her first full-time employment was as a stewardess for the then brand-new passenger air service, Eastern Airlines. She then put her husband through Vanderbilt Law School working as a secretary for the Chancellor of the University. Thereafter she was a homemaker. After raising a family, she worked part-time at the ETSU Wesley Foundation for Reverend Bedford Transou. At her death, Nancy Herrin was a member of Fortnightly and a participant in the ETSU Continued Learning Series, a program conceived and founded by a life-long family friend, Oris D. Hyder. She was known by many as the epitome of southern grace and charm which served to dilute the natural Herrin genetics and proclivities. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kent Herrin, who died November 10, 1994 and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Mackintosh who died in 2003. Nancy Herrin is survived by her three children and their spouses: Eugenia Herrin Hamlett and husband Allen, Kent Erickson Herrin and wife Ellen, and Benjamin Scott Herrin and wife Gail. Grandchildren are: her namesake, Nancy Elizabeth Peppers (21), Wesley Thomas Peppers (15); William Kent Herrin (18), and Paul Erickson Herrin (16); Mark Alan Broyles (28), and Nicole Broyles Cooper (31). The family also recognizes with deep gratitude the special contributions of caregivers, Becky Frye Hale, Marta Huerta and Janice Cross whose kind and gentle hands provided immeasurable solace. Evelyn Wright also provided valuable help at Edisto Beach. Dr. David Moulton, Pharmacist Joe Knisley, Dr. Steve Herrin and Dr. Charles Bomar Herrin used their medical talents and compassion for many years which the family will forever consider a blessing. Pallbearers are nephews and niece: Scott Herrin, Charles Bomar Herrin, M.D., Steve Herrin, M.D., Bryan Herrin, Sarah Herrin Goldschmidt, Richard Mackintosh, Robert Mackintosh, and John Mackintosh. The family will celebrate with and receive friends at Morris-Baker Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 from 5 to 7 PM. The Funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 11 AM in the sanctuary of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family plan to dedicate a memorial Live Oak tree with Spanish Moss located on the preserved open vistas of Edisto Island honoring the life of their mother. Those wishing to contribute to this memorial may, in lieu of flowers, send a contribution to Edisto Island Open Land Trust, P.O. Box 1, Edisto Island, SC 29438 (www.edisto.org).
