Mrs. Nella Ruth 'Nell'? Hurd McCollum, 88, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Mrs. McCollum was born in Hancock County, Eidson, Tennessee. When she was very young, her parents moved to Church Hill, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Worley Hurd and Ollie Dean Hurd. Nell was a graduate of Church Hill High School, and was later employed by Kingsport Press where she worked in the shipping office. She married William (Bill) McCollum in June, 1950 and in 1967 they moved to Springfield, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. She was employed at Virginia Concrete, Alexandria, Virginia for a short time and later served as church secretary and receptionist at First Baptist Church, Springfield, for over twenty years. She touched the lives of many people in her service at First Baptist Church. Following retirement, the McCollums moved to Johnson City, where they joined Central Baptist Church. Nell became church clerk and secretary to the Board of Directors soon after joining Central Baptist. She was a member of the Ambers Wilson Sunday School Class. Nell was a charter member of Chapter 259 of the Mended Hearts, Inc. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Fred H. Hurd, Church Hill, Kemp Hurd, Kingsport, and Charles Hurd, Mount Carmel; one sister, Edna Wagner, Church Hill; one niece, Roberta Lynn McCollum, Springfield, Virginia; and one brother-in-law, George McCollum, Johnson City. Survivors include: her husband, William (Bill) McCollum; one sister, Mrs. Jane Ingram, Mount Carmel; and sister-in-law, Amanda McCollum, Johnson City. She is also survived by a number of precious nieces and nephews and their families. The family of Mrs. McCollum will receive friends Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Central Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM with Dr. Ron Murray, Pastor, and Rev. Tony Martin, Minister of Music, officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Committal services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Monday, February 2, 2015 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:30 PM to go in procession to the cemetery for those services. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 N. Roan St., Johnson City, TN 37601.
