Norma Jean Sheets Burgess, age 87, went home to her Heavenly Father on Friday, September 8, 2023. She passed away peacefully at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. She had been living at Abundant Christian Living Community.
Norma was a country girl, born in Butler, TN. She spent her life in this area and attended Science Hill High School and East TN State University. She retired from the Veteran’s Administration in Johnson City, where she worked as an administrative assistant in the Psychology Department, making a positive impact and life-long friends. Of the Christian faith, Norma attended Skyline Heights Baptist Church. She lived a simple life, enjoying simple pleasures. She enjoyed cooking, theater shows, country music, painting, crafts, and her beloved cats.
Preceding her in death were her mother, Mary Jane Sheets, her husband, Guy Burgess Jr., and an aunt, Lydia Sheets. Surviving relatives include two sons, Jeff Burgess and his wife Jennifer, John Burgess and his wife Janet. In addition, she had a daughter, Jennifer Landstreet and her husband Collins. She also had five grandchildren, Jordan Robinett and her husband Wyatt, Jessica King and her husband Tyler, Audrey and Camille Landstreet, and Carly McCoy. She had one great-grandchild, Remi Leigh, daughter of Jordan and Wyatt Robinett.
The family would like to extend immense gratitude to all the staff of Christian Assisted Living and Abundant Christian Living Community for the excellent care and companionship given to Norma. She enjoyed live music, bingo, Bible study, and many other activities at these facilities. This kept her happy and busy for the last year of her life. Another thank you goes out to her hairstylist and friend, Shane Grubbs, for keeping her beautiful and giving her a listening ear.
The family will receive friends at Morris- Baker Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 13, from 12-1 p.m. The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m., with a brief graveside service at Monta Vista Memorial Park to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Appalachian Highland Humane Society in Johnson City or the Washington County Animal Shelter.
