Obituary for Norma Jean Cannon
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Norma Jean Cannon's passing on February 19, 2025, at the age of 95, in Johnson City, TN, Norma Jean lived a full life devoted to her faith, family and career She graduated from Science Hill and ETSU, and was very proud of her degree in education and literature .She taught 2nd grade for over 35 years in the Johnson City School system. Known for her warmth and wisdom, she touched the lives of countless students. She was a lifelong active member of Central Baptist Church. She began singing in the choir as a teenager and had a beautiful voice. She had a true servant’s heart and greatly enjoyed being part of The Care and Concern Committee . She was also a proud member of The Monday Club, The Garden Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma,a society for key women educators.
She married Stewart Cannon on June 22, 1951 and they were married for 60 years. In those six decades of marriage, they were known as a team in every sense. They gave of themselves willingly, happily,by hosting dinners and parties that invariably ended with Stewart playing the piano and both leading their guests in song. Norma Jean’s bright smile and infectious southern charm made everyone feel special. They were strong patrons of the arts and theatre, a tradition Norma Jean continued when Stewart passed away. And always, in all things, Norma Jean was the essence of style, proudly wearing all things purple as only she could.
