Norma J. Long

April 15, 1940 — October 22, 2009

Mrs. Norma J. Long, of Johnson City, died a peaceful death and went to be with the Lord, surrounded by her family and friends on Thursday October 22, 2009 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Norma was a native of Johnson City and the daughter of the late Pal and Ruby Malone Shell and the second of five children. She was a 1958 graduate of Science Hill High School, where she was the Head Majorette for the marching band. Norma worked for ETSU Physicians and Associates for over twenty-five years as an Office Manager and Program Coordinator for the OBGYN Medical Division. Norma enjoyed cooking, shopping, (especially from ABC and QVC), and the joy of life that came from being with her family and friends. She attended several churches within the community, but always loved a good sermon given by Mack Houston of the Piney Flats Methodist Church. Mrs. Long is survived by her husband of over thirty-nine years, Charles Long, her children Kimberly Carey Williams of Erwin, Andrew D. Frye of Orlando, Florida and Chad Long of Johnson City, as well as her stepdaughter Terrie Lynn Long of Richmond, Virginia. Her brothers and sisters, Robert Shell Tommy Shell, Brenda Price and Janice Barr. Her grandchild Max Carey and extended family members Greg Rose, Melinda Shepherd, Heath Scott, Ben Scott, Robert Williams, Brandi Hicks, Aaron and Gabrielle Williams. A special thanks to the team of doctors and nurses at the 2700 Intensive Care Unit at the Johnson City Medical Center for providing extraordinary care to our mother throughout her short illness. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Somi Rikhye, and nurses; Steven Trentham, Annette Silvers and Jill Smith for their hard work in caring for our mother and the compassionate support they provided to our family. A memorial service for Mrs. Long will be conducted at 4 PM Sunday October 25, 2009 in the Morris-Baker North Chapel. Rev. Mack Houston and Rev. Joseph W. Manis, Sr. will officiate. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 PM Sunday prior to the service.
