Norris D. Hawks, 72, of Johnson City, TN passed away Friday, October 17, 2008 in the Mountain Home (TN) V.A. Community Living Center, following a year-long illness. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Linda Sullivan Hawks of Johnson City; daughter Melody Hawks Mazich and son-in-law Sam Mazich of Norcross, GA; beloved granddaughter, Hannah Elizabeth Mazich ; brother, Edwin Hawks of Randleman, NC; two nephews, Michael Hawks and Chris Hawks; one great nephew, Christopher Hawks; special sisters-in-law, Louise Bray of Lakeland, FL, Karen Sink of Thomasville, NC and Judy Rains of Trinity, NC. A son of the late Hoyt and Lollie Maddox Hawks of Thomasville, NC he was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey D. Hawks. Mr. Hawks was born February 3, 1936 in Thomasville ,NC. He was a graduate of Thomasville High School and the University of Georgia. Following two years service in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany, he began his career as an insurance claims adjuster in Jacksonville, Florida. A transfer led him and his family to Johnson City, TN in 1965. He retired from State Auto Insurance Company in 1998. A member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church for over 40 years, Mr. Hawks most recently served as an usher and in the Shepherd ministry. He was also an active member of the 'Coffee Group'? which met daily for many years at the drugstore in downtown Johnson City and later, at the McDonalds on Main Street. In addition to his family and friends, the things he loved most were the Georgia Bulldogs, country music, and being on the golf course. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Mountain Home for the skilled and compassionate care he received there. Thanks also to the many friends who provided their prayers, love and support during this difficult time. The funeral service for Norris D. Hawks will be conducted at 4 PM Sunday, October 19, 2008 in the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 225 Princeton Road, Johnson City. Rev. Paul Seay and Rev. James Bennington will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 to 4 PM Sunday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 10 AM Monday, October 20, 2008 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Everyone will meet at Morris-Baker at 9:30 AM Monday to go in procession. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. For those who prefer, the family suggests donations may be made to Wesley Memorial UMC in memory of Mr. Hawks.
