Oran T. Austin

November 14, 1921 — May 7, 2015

The gates of heaven opened up at 4:30 a.m. on May 7th, 2015, for Oran T. Austin, 93, a true Christian man. Born Nov.14, 1921 in Johnson City, to parents Howard and Mary Austin. He was a lifelong resident of Johnson City and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in India where he also contracted Malaria. He was awarded the Bronze Star for honor and bravery under fire. He was a pipe fitter by trade and worked at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home until his retirement in 1987. His wife of fifty-nine years, Helen, preceded him in death in 2005. He had two brothers, Wilburn and Bo, who also preceded him in death. Survivors include: two sisters, Evelyn Williams and husband Vincent of Johnson City, Dean Holland of Chattanooga, and sister-in-law Gerrie Austin of Johnson City, daughter Amy King and husband Gary of Unicoi, granddaughter Ashley Broyles and husband Brandon, great grandson Maddox of Jonesborough and several nieces and nephews. Oran was a blessed man, loved, respected and will be missed by all. The family would like to thank the employees, nurses and staff of Christian Care Center of Johnson City for their dedication and excellent care while there. Caris Healthcare for their care and support and the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. They would also like to thank Loeva Saylor King and George and Edna Woodby for the care they provided while at home. The family of Mr. Oran T. Austin will receive friends from 2 to 4 PM Sunday, May 10, 2014, in the Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 4 PM with Rev. Robert McCurry and Brandon Broyles officiating. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 10 AM Monday, in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be: Gary King, Drew Austin, Jay Wise, James Dennison, Tim Greene, Brandon Broyles, Leonard Cox and Larry King. The Boone Dam Post # 4933 and the Tennessee National Guard will accord military honors. Ministers, family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home by 9:30 AM Monday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer?s Association, 207 N. Boone Street, Johnson City TN 37604.
