Patty Ann Wahlberg

Dr. Patty Ann Gibbs Wahlberg, 65, of Kingsport, TN, died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the home of her friends in Greeneville, TN. She was born May 3,1947 in Steubenville, OH, the daughter of the late Robert Duane Gibbs and Helen Blankenship Gibbs Detrick. She received a masters degree in social work in 1971 and a doctoral degree in education in 1982 from West Virginia University. For many years she directed the undergraduate social work programs, first at West Virginia University and second at East Tennessee State University. She was known nationally for her publications and presentations on social work education issues and regionally for her work on professional ethics. She served the field of social work in two professional organizations: The Baccalaureate Program Directors Association and the Council on Social Work Education. In 1982, as a doctoral student, she was awarded the Phi Delta Kappa Award for outstanding doctoral research, and in 1994, as a faculty member, she was the recipient of the Mary Catherine Buswell Award for outstanding contributions to women, awarded by West Virginia Universitys Council for Womens Concerns. She was the recipient of outstanding teacher/faculty awards at both West Virginia University and East Tennessee State University, the latter presented by the Student Social Work Association. International experiences included teaching English in China in the summer of 2004 and professional paper presentations in Japan in 1989 and 2003. Her husband Dr. James Wahlberg preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, Shaun Paul Snyder of Oviedo, FL and Brian Robert Meehan of Morgantown, WV; a daughter-in-law, Kelly Mack Snyder of Oviedo, FL; and a sister, Sue Gibbs Minor of Weirton,WV. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, April 5, 2013 at 7:00 pm in the North Chapel of the Morris '? Baker Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until time of service at 7:00 pm. A memorial service in Weirton, WV and burial in Sandstone, MN will be scheduled at a later date.
