Paul W. Hughes, Sr. 87, of 710 Treadway Street, Johnson City died Saturday, November 28, 2009 in the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Hughes was a native of Avery County, NC, had lived in Maryland most of his life, lived in Marion, VA for nineteen years and in Johnson City since 2006. He was a son of the late Cephus and Verda Oakes Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a retired heating Mechanic/Technician. He was a member of the Walnut Christian Church. Mr. Hughes was also a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. He is preceded in death by: his parents; and one sister Bernice Sexton. Survivors include: two sons, Paul Hughes, Jr. and wife Carolyn of Glenelg, Maryland, and Robert Hughes and wife Paula of Arbutus, Maryland; one daughter, Patricia Hall and her husband Ken of Manhatten, Kansas; three grandchildren, Paul Hughes III, Nicole Hughes, and Karen Hall Grosser. The funeral service for Paul W. Hughes, Sr. will be conducted at 1 PM Thursday, December 3, 2009 in the Morris-Baker North Chapel. Mr. Tim Carlson, Minister will officiate. Music will be by Mrs. Brenda Buck, Soloist. Interment will follow in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Full Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Boone Dam VFW Post along with soldiers of the Tennessee National Guard. Active pallbearers will be Bill Hughes, Arthur Buck, Jack Hughes, Paul Hughes III, and Paul Hughes, Jr. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday evening.
