Pete Zannis, 62, Johnson City, passed away Friday, September 18, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born August 10, 1953 in Birmingham, Alabama and resided in Johnson City most of his life. Pete graduated from ETSU where he played on the tennis team and won the Intercollegiate Singles and Doubles titles. He continued to play competitively after college, winning the Southern Hard Court Championships in 1981. Pete was head tennis professional at the Johnson City Country Club for 38 years, where he developed one of the state and south?s premier junior tennis programs and touched the lives of many. He started coaching the Science Hill High School tennis team in 2000 and had a great run with the team for 14 years. Pete led Science Hill to five Class AAA team state titles, three doubles team titles, and one individual championship. Pete was inducted into the ETSU Hall of Fame in 1996 for contributions to tennis in the community and outstanding play while attending ETSU. He was also named TSSAA Coach of the Year in 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, George Pete Zannis, and mother, Helen Zannis. Pete is survived by: his wife of 32 years, Kathy Zannis, of the home; sister, Mary Zannis Tombrello, Birmingham, AL; sister-in-law, Vicki Wilson, and her husband Myron, Bristol, TN; and two very special nephews, Tyler and Nicholas Wilson, Bristol, TN. The family of Pete Zannis will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Tuesday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 5:00 pm with Pastor Tom Oyler officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery for those services.
