Dr. R. Allen Crowe, Jr. died Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in Johnson City. He was born March 2, 1929 in Little Rock, Arkansas to R.A. and Lula Harlan Crowe of Forest, LA. He grew up in Forest and graduated from Forest High School. He earned Bachelor of Science from Louisiana College in Pineville, LA and a D.D.S. from Loyola University of New Orleans. While in college, he served in the Louisiana National Guard and worked as a part time X-Ray technician. Shortly after entering dental school, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and was on active duty with the Navy Senior Dental Student Program. While in Dental School, he was selected for membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a national and local honor dental society. After completing Dental School, he served in the U.S. Navy at U.S. Naval Dental Clinic, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii until 1962. After completing his time in the U.S. Navy, he returned to Ruston, LA in private dental practice, until he joined the faculty of LSU School of Dentistry in 1970. He retired from LSU School of Dentistry as a Professor of Operative Dentistry in 1995. He was a Charter Member of Theta Kappa Chapter of OKU and served as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President and President of that chapter. While teaching at LSU School of Dentistry, he earned Masters of Education from University of New Orleans. He was a long term active member and served as deacon at Edgewater Baptist Church in New Orleans, LA. He has been a active member of Central Baptist Church since moving to the area in 1996. He has been active in the Interfaith Hospitality Network and various mission projects with the church. Since retirement, his hobbies have been traveling, woodworking, wood turning, model railroading, gardening, and family activities. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 38 years Jean Holton Crowe, and by his parents, Reuben and Lula Crowe. He is survived by his second wife Lillian Ruth Bateman Crowe: a son, David H. Crowe and wife Debbie of Pearl River, LA.; a daughter, Sharon Crowe Collins of Slidell, LA; a step-son, Donald M. Larson and wife Marielle of Charlotte, NC; a step-daughter Kathy L. Hood and husband John of Charlotte, NC; step daughter Andrea L. Schultz and husband Ken of Matthews, NC; Craig P. Larson and wife Aileen of Gulfport, MS; nine grandchildren and one great grandson. The funeral service for Dr. R. Allen Crowe, Jr. will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, September 26,2009 in the Central Baptist Church. Dr. Ron Murray, Rev. Bill Warfield and Mr. Tony Martin will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Dr. Ted Beach Sunday School Class. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 10 AM Monday, September 28, 2009 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Boone Dam VFW Post and the Tennessee National Guard. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 PM Saturday prior to the service.
