Ray Thomas Dempsey, 82, Johnson City, TN, died Friday, June 2, 2006 at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mr. Dempsey was a native of Greenville, SC and had lived in Johnson City for the past eight years. He was a son of the late Marshall L. and Flossie Felment Dempsey. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dempsey was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Gulledge, one brother, William Dempsey and one stepson, Terry Gibson. Mr. Dempsey was a WWII US Army veteran. He was a retired Chief Inspector for the State of South Carolina Home Inspection Bureau and had been a homebuilder and real estate land developer in Greenville, SC for over fifty years. Mr. Dempsey was a former president of the Greenville Home Builders Association, a commissioner of public works for the Parker District of Greenville County. He was survived by three grandsons, Michael Ray Gibson, Sharpsburg, GA, Robert Gibson, Greenville, SC and Jonathon Gibson, Greenville, SC; one granddaughter, Patti Stevens, Orlando, FL; one sister, Lillie Perry, Ohio; one step-son, Phil Gibson, Greenville, SC; two great grandchildren, Christopher Gibson and Nicholas Gibson both of Sharpsburg, GA and a very special friend, Cleo Moser. A graveside service for Mr. Dempsey will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, TN. Chaplain Wilford C. Manley will officiate. Military graveside honors will be provided by Kingsport VFW Post #3382. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
