Robert Aaron Smith, Sr., age 83, Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at The Waters of Johnson City.
He was born at Pressman’s Home in Rogersville, Tennessee on November 26, 1935, and lived most of his life in Kingsport, Tennessee. He graduated from Lynn View High School in 1953. He enjoyed years of class picnics and monthly get togethers. He looked forward to Rook night with his close friends. He played his last game with them two weeks ago.
Robert served in the United States Air Force from 1955-1958. He was a buyer in the food industry, and he worked for Giant Food Markets, Fleming Foods, and Hale Brothers/Summitt. He was a member of Central Church of Christ. While at The Waters, he attended services conducted by Pleasant View Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Emma Price Smith; his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Faye DeBord Smith; and sisters, Peggy Francsico and Emily Smith.
He is survived by his children, Barbara (Joseph) Taylor, Robert (Judy) Smith Jr., Belinda Smith, and Becky Smith; grandchildren, Jordan Taylor, Aaron Smith, Gabriel Taylor, and Anthony Smith; nieces and nephews; and family friends, Lorrie Goff, Ann Willis, Lynn Taylor, and J.C. Byas.
The family of Robert Smith will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2019 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in the Dogwood chapel. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Minister Tim Hall officiating. The committal service with military honors will be conducted at 10:45 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2019 at Mountain Home National Cemetery, under the direction of Tom Lilley. Meet at the cemetery gates at 10:35 a.m. and wait to go in procession.
Active pallbearers will be Robert Smith Jr., Jeff Francisco, J.C. Byas, Brooks Monroe, Wayne Steenberg, and Lynn Taylor. Honorary pallbearers are Joseph Taylor, Robert Cupp, Dave Clark, and Dennis Vonderfecht.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Waters for taking such good care of Dad and making him feel at home and Avalon Hospice for your compassion, visits, flowers, and his military ceremony. Brooks, thank you for being his friend and not just his hospice nurse.
