Abel, 70, of Johnson City, passed away at his residence on Monday, November 7, 2011. He was a native of Roanoke, VA and a son of the late Fred L., Sr. and Marylee Maine Abel . Mr. Abel was a retired Welder for Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 538. He was a 50 year member of the local union.He was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church. Mr. Abel was a wonderful husband, dad, papaw and friend. He was a great story teller. A special thank you goes to his family at University Parkway Baptist Church, and to Mountain States Hospice, Doctors Ken Cutshall, Tony Haley, Dr. O. and Charles Famoyin, the McLeod Cancer Center of Johnson City, and the Doctors, Nurses and staff at the Johnson City Medical Center on the 5200 and 5300 wings. A very special thank you goes out to Annamarie. Survivors include; his wife, Patsy K Owens Abel; two sons, Ross W. Abel and his wife, Melanie D. and Tim Abel all of Johnson City; two Grandchildren, Zac and Luke Abel both of Johnson City; two brothers, Fred Abel, Jr., and Kenneth Abel both of Johnson City; two sisters, Henrietta Abel and Carolyn Abel both of Johnson City and several nieces and nephews. His extended family; Ashley Anne Abel and Janice and John Walton.Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 pm Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from the University Parkway Baptist Church. Dr. Michael D. Oaks will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday from the Monte Vista Burial Park. Family and friends will meet at the graveside. Active pallbearers will be Michael Owens, Bobby Owens, Charles Gilley, Tony Love, Hurschell Scalf, Big Jim Murray, Roger Lambert, Harry Ford, Chuck Gilley and Dave Abel. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles Famoyin, Dr. Kenneth Cutshall, Dr. Tony Haley, Fred Abel, Jr., John Walton, Jim Owens, Mickey Archer, Zac Abel and Luke Abel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain States Foundation, Niswonger Childrens Hospital, 2335 Knob Creek Road, Suite #101, Johnson City, TN 37604''9945. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Wednesday.
