Mr. Roy Lee Gwaltney, 91, 501 Rose Avenue, Johnson City, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Medical Center at Mountain Home. Mr. Gwaltney was a native of Marshall, North Carolina who had lived in Johnson City since 1968. He was the son of the late Robert Lee and Veda Anderson Gwaltney. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Gwaltney; one sister, Kate Brown. Mr. Gwaltney was a US Army-Air Force veteran of WWII having served in both the African and European theaters of war. He retired as store manager from A&P Tea Company in 1982 after forty-five years of service. He was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Hazel Clampitt Gwaltney of the home; one son, Ron Gwaltney and his wife Tammy of Spring Hill, Tn.; one daughter, Carolyn Vance of Roan Mountain; one sister, Ruth Palmer of Asheville, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Christy Gwaltney of Pensacola, Florida, Roy Vance of Roan Mountain and Zachary Vance of Roan Mountain; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Roy Lee Gwaltney will be conducted at 1:30 PM Sunday May 24, 2009 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Reece Harris will officiate. Faye Campbell and Judy Ellis will provide music. The graveside committal service will follow in the Rose lawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Roy Vance, Zachary Vance, Russell Swift, Eddie Brown, Jack Baldwin and Buddy Glover. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 12 to 1:30 PM prior to the service.
