Ruth Hess Hughes, 93, Gray, went to be with her Lord Sunday, January 28, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center. She was born February 23, 1924, in Buchanan County, VA, and was the daughter of the late Elisha and Venia Harris Hess. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her loving husband of 45 years, Matthew C. Hughes; five brothers, Howard, Arthur, Jonah, Ralph and Earl Hess; three sisters, Edith James, Hazel Combs and Dollie Austin. Ruth moved to Johnson City in 1941 to attend Johnson City Business College. She was employed at NARC, Steinway Clothing and Charles Dept. Store. Ruth was a member of Piney Flats First Baptist Church and formally Heritage Baptist Church. She loved working in her yard and garden, cooking Sunday meals for everyone and enjoyed sewing, working jigsaw puzzles and word search books. Survivors include: one son, Dayton (Sylvia) Hughes; one daughter, Barbara (Jerre) Whitson; four grandchildren, Jason (Jerri) Hughes, Holly (Maurice) Curry, Jamie (Kim) Hughes and Jeremy (Lacy) Hughes; nine great grandchildren, Jaid, J.D., Adam, Adrienne, Hayden, Carsyn and Remy Hughes and Caleb and Myles Curry; one sister, Mint (Davis) McGlothlin, of Honaker, VA; one sister-in-law, Josephine Hess, of Chilhowie, VA; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Lockey Carr. The family of Ruth Hughes will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, January 29, 2018 at Morris-Baker. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM with Pastor Allen Davis and Pastor Mark Fowler officiating. Music will be conducted by her Music Pastor, Brian Wilson, and Gregg and Tammy Ruston. Pallbearers include: her grandsons, Jason, Jamie, Jeremy, J.D., Adam, Hayden and Remy Hughes and Maurice, Caleb and Myles Curry. Honorary pallbearers include: Roger Combs, Euell Goodman, Delmer Hess, Jack Tester, Jack Whitson and Dr. David Moulton. The family will also receive friends at other times at the home of her daughter, Barbara Whitson, where Ruth had lived for the past 15 months. Family and friends are asked to meet at Happy Valley Memorial Park by 12:50 PM Tuesday for a 1:00 PM graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude, Piney Flats First Baptist Church Building Fund, or Pleasant Beach Baptist Church Building Fund.
