Sam Scalf, 79, Johnson City, died Monday, October 13, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Scalf was a native of Stoney Creek and had lived most of his life in Johnson City. He was a son of the late Rhuda and Maggie Scalf. Mr. Scalf retired in 1994 from Holston Defense Fire Department and was also a former employee of the Johnson City Fire Department. He was a member of Buffalo Valley Christian Church and was inducted into the 'Wall of Fame'? in 2002. Survivors include his wife, Mary Scalf; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Wayne Hovatter, Erwin; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Leigh Scalf, Clinton, TN; son, Dylan Scalf, Las Vegas, NV; grandson, Nate Scalf Muncy, Las Vegas, NV; sister and her husband, Geraldine and Dean Grindstaff, Johnson City; cousin, Claudia Ensor, Stoney Creek and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Mr. Scalf will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday, October 16, 2008 from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Mr. Mike Turner and Mr. Tommy Joe Andrews will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11AM until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Selected as honorary pallbearers are C.B. Kinch, Greg Sharpe, Harry Harmon, Harry Gibson, David Cassell, Tommy Joe Andrews, Joey Andrews, Larry Ford, Dan Mahoney and Pete Paduch. The family expresses a special thanks to Amedisys Home Health, the Johnson City Medical Center Hospice and Mrs. Harry (Nancy) Gibson, who has sent Sam a card every week during the nine years he has been sick. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity.
