Silvester Phipps, 91, of Johnson City passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018, at JCMC after a brief battle with cancer. Silvester was the fourth of fifteen children born to the late Lloyd and Stella Phipps of Clintwood, Virginia. He joined the Navy at 17 years of age and served in the Pacific during World War II. When he returned home, he attended Barber School in Richmond, Virginia. He worked as a barber in Clintwood for 50 years before he retired and moved to Johnson City. Silvester joined the Presbyterian Church in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was active in Princeton Presbyterian Church in Johnson City, TN. He was an avid fisherman and a master gardener, sharing his bounty of fruits and vegetables with family, friends and neighbors. His love of music led him and his wife to The Red Barn where they enjoyed the many new friends they met there. Silvester is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Eula South Phipps. His son, Michael (Janet) Phipps of Abingdon, Virginia. One granddaughter, LeeAnne (Brian) Schmid of Kernersville, NC. One grandson, Matthew (Misty) Phipps of White Sulphur Springs, WV. One great grandson, Bryson Schmid of Kernersville, NC. The family of Silvester Phipps will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, officiated by the Reverend J. Andrew White. A committal will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park, family and friends are asked to gather at the graveside following the service.
