Mrs. Sonia S. King passed away on August 20, 2018 at her home in Johnson City, Tenn. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-four years, James M. King, an ETSU graduate and a U.S. Air-Force veteran. In addition to her husband, her parents Mary B. and James C. Martin, preceded Mrs. King in death. Survivors include her two step-daughters, Theresa McCroskey and her husband Lary and Conchita Owenby; five grandchildren, Katie McCroskey, Garen McCroskey, Reed Johnson and his wife Amy, Haley Warner and her husband Josh, and Micah Johnson; two great grandchildren, Andrew Warner and Cali Warner; step-brother Phil Martin and step-sister Marti Martin; two sisters-in-law, Reba Lowe and her husband Marion and Gayle King; and special friends, Lorna and Bill Smith. The family extends a special thank you to all of the health care and hospice workers who have provided loving care to Mrs. King. Mrs. King is a graduate of Science Hill High School where she excelled in academics and skipped the 12th grade. Without telling her mother, she walked to the Training School and signed up for a class and then walked across the street to Dossett Hall, where she signed up for classes at ETSC. Mrs. King worked as a bookkeeper, insurance rater, and in real estate. She eventually obtained her Texas real estate license from Commercial College, and she retired from Deloitte and Touche Property Tax Services. In retirement, Mrs. King remained very active. She was a member of the ETSU Foundation; President of Summit Place Condominium Association; member of the Board of Governors for the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough; member of the Salvation Army Women?s Auxiliary; member of the Monday Club, as well as a member of the Johnson City Symphony Guild. With her lifelong passion for the arts, Mrs. King?s generosity has funded many artistic endeavors. A program of special interest for Mrs. King includes the ETSU @ Rome experience, a program providing ETSU students academically challenging and culturally enriching overseas study experiences. The International Storytelling Center recognized her for her dedication, service, and longstanding contributions by naming ISC?s Library Room at the Mary B. Martin Storytelling Hall in her honor. In 2015, the ETSU National Alumni Association named her an Honorary Alumni. She was a loyal supporter of the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre. The family of Mrs. Sonia S. King will receive friends on Friday, August 24, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A celebration of life will follow at 1:00 PM withDoctor Tommy Hood officiating. The committal service will be held following services at 3:00 PM on Friday, August 24, in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 N. Roan Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
